Dear CHS Wrestling Alumni, Family and Friends,

Welcome to the third edition of our Calaveras High School Wrestling Alumni Newsletter. The regular season has come to an end and we wanted to update you on how the year progressed.

This year was another banner year for the Calaveras Wrestling Team. After ending the season last year with only 24 wrestlers, one of our smallest teams ever, this year we ended the season with 41 wrestlers, one of the largest ever. The JV team finished the year undefeated with a 6-0 record and beat BH 51-21 for the MLL Championship.  At the league tournament, seven Calaveras JV wrestlers captured individual championships. This is our third JV MLL Crown in a row and seventh in the last eight years.

The Varsity team finished with a 9-4 record overall and 4-1 record in league. In front of a standing room only crowd in Angels Camp, we lost the big dual to BH, 29-49. However, the team showed a great amount of resiliency as they rebounded to win the MLL Tournament with six individual champions. Thirteen CHS wrestlers qualified for the Division 5 Sectional Tournament where we continued our winning ways with a second place finish. Eight wrestlers qualified for the Masters Tournament, where our best two wrestlers, Brian Rutledge, 112, and Chris Watson, 171, each came within one match of placing. Starting next year our section will qualify 7 to the state tournament.

We were very fortunate to have two CHS alumni help coach the team this year. Ryan Upchurch, (class of ‘99) who is teaching in Mt. Ranch and Dan Rios, (class of ‘03) who is attending Delta College, were a tremendous help.

It’s been fun seeing more and more alumni attending our matches. This year we even competed against the sons of two alumni. Rene Garcia (class of ‘81) and Neal Cordeiro (class of ‘83), both have sons who are wrestling at other schools.

Coach Bowe has been working hard keeping our web page updated. Go to CalaverasHighSchool.com and click on Sports, then Wrestling. We have current team information, alumni news, past records, state qualifiers and hall of fame galleries, and much more.

We have included a list of this year’s sponsors. Thank you for your support. If you would like to be taken off our mailing list, just let us know.

We hope you have a great spring and summer, and we’ll be in contact in the fall.

Sincerely,

Vince Bicocca, Mark Bowe, Doug Clark
